Sharing is caring!

Ooh, la la! With their iconic curly coat and elegant stance, poodles stand out in the dog crowd. As icons of French culture, poodles are France’s favorite dog breed and have reigned alongside royalty for centuries. Though they’ve found favor with the royals, poodles are down to Earth. With beauty both inside and out, poodles are beloved by everyone and love everyone.

Poodle History

Poodles have European ancestry, though it’s debated whether they originated from Germany or France. Either way, they were originally hunting dogs bred by wildfowlers to catch ducks in the water. Because of their versatile nature, poodles have a fun and vibrant history beyond hunting. Around the 19th century, they became staples of traveling circuses. Although carnivals have seen better days, poodles are still performers. Today, many are bred as show-dogs, strutting around the runway. From the circus to the show, they’ve always been stars!

Poodle Personality

Poodles are known for their dynamic personalities and capabilities. You may have noticed training your teacup poodle was a breeze. Intuitive and eager to learn, poodles are the second-most intelligent dog breed, with border collies as number one. Because of their loving nature, they make perfect family dogs and are great with children. Although they often prefer the company of people, they get along well with other dogs, especially when socialized early.

Poodle Health

Because of their sporty build, Poodles are very healthy dogs and tend to live a long and full life. However, it’s important to be aware of possible health concerns. Toy Poodles are susceptible to orthopedic issues like Legg-Calve-Perthes, while Standard Poodles are prone to hip dysplasia and Addison’s disease. To ensure his health, bring your pup to the veterinarian for regular check-ups and evaluations.

Poodle Care And Keeping

Like all dogs, Poodles benefit from healthy lifestyles like routine exercise and balanced diets. However, what sets them apart is grooming. As water dogs, Poodles have dense, curly fur that requires more maintenance than the average dog coat. To keep her fur healthy and beautiful, your poodle must be combed daily to prevent matting. Additionally, regular trims and baths are also a maintenance must. Remember to groom her thoroughly every four to six weeks.
